The company who launched by giving away their product for free
I came across Girlfriend Collective early this year on Facebook. A friend had shared a link to this unknown activewear brand because they were literally giving away their product. For free. Zip. Zero. Nada. Not because there was anything wrong with it, but because they’d decided to direct the entire marketing budget for the launch into giving away their gear for free. What a marketing strategy, hey?

So Zuckerburg decided to do a Melania Trump and rip-off Snapchat, as perfectly meme’d here. Some are calling it a gamechanger, others the death of Snapchat.
What we know is that Snapchat’s users have been on the increase for years, with the number of daily Snapchat users now overtaking the amount of daily Twitter users. This has seen Snapchat shift from a niche social network into somewhat of the mainstream. (It’s big, you guys!) Older users had begun jumping on board, brands were really starting to pay attention, and then BANG! Instagram (owned by Facebook) plays the copy card and introduces Instagram Stories.

Why your brand needs Snapchat, stat.
I’ll be honest. I didn’t get Snapchat at first. In fact, I didn’t ‘get it’ until very recently. Perhaps as a digital marketer that’s something I shouldn’t admit to so publicly, but alas, it’s the truth.
At first glance, the interface is clunky and unintuitive, it’s difficult to find friends and, when you finally do, you just send a picture … that then disappears? The youth are obsessed it with 45% of users ages 18-24 so perhaps that’s also why I’ve stayed away – does anyone I know even use it?
