Kate Ware on Brand Builders – Ticker TV

It’s no secret that talking social media for business is one of my favourite things to do. So what a delight it was to be asked as a guest on Brand Builders (Ticker TV) recently. Not only did I get to do one of my favourite things but I got to do it with some of the best social and content brains in the business – host Trevor Young and social superstar and all-round legend, Cherie Clonan of The Digital Picnic.

Social media for brands in times of crisis

Social media for brands in times of crisis

It’s almost impossible to put words to the scale of the disaster at hand; today, my first day back at work and not only is the air heavy with smoke but emotion. Geelong is thousands of km’s away from the fire fronts of Gippsland and the South Coast of NSW, and yet here we are, blanketed by the aftermath of destruction, my colleagues and I all simultaneously feeling helpless (among many other emotions).
Being glued to media channels all weekend, the endless stories of heartbreak have also been balanced by some tiny glimmers of light and hope in how people are using social media to unite and rally. As Celeste Barber keeps reminding us – power to the people.

Three years ago, I started BuzzPop Social. A brand-focused social media agency to help big picture thinkers get their businesses the attention they deserve online.

To be perfectly frank, it took me a while to refine my service offering. I wanted to focus on social, hence the name, but I had a passion for branding and knew that behind every successful digital brand lay a killer and watertight brand strategy.

The company who launched by giving away their product for free

The company who launched by giving away their product for free

I came across Girlfriend Collective early this year on Facebook. A friend had shared a link to this unknown activewear brand because they were literally giving away their product. For free. Zip. Zero. Nada. Not because there was anything wrong with it, but because they’d decided to direct the entire marketing budget for the launch into giving away their gear for free. What a marketing strategy, hey?

Instagram stories will not be the end of Snapchat

Instagram stories will not be the end of Snapchat

So Zuckerburg decided to do a Melania Trump and rip-off Snapchat, as perfectly meme’d here. Some are calling it a gamechanger, others the death of Snapchat.

What we know is that Snapchat’s users have been on the increase for years, with the number of daily Snapchat users now overtaking the amount of daily Twitter users. This has seen Snapchat shift from a niche social network into somewhat of the mainstream. (It’s big, you guys!) Older users had begun jumping on board, brands were really starting to pay attention, and then BANG! Instagram (owned by Facebook) plays the copy card and introduces Instagram Stories.

Why your brand needs Snapchat, stat.

Why your brand needs Snapchat, stat.

I’ll be honest. I didn’t get Snapchat at first. In fact, I didn’t ‘get it’ until very recently. Perhaps as a digital marketer that’s something I shouldn’t admit to so publicly, but alas, it’s the truth.

At first glance, the interface is clunky and unintuitive, it’s difficult to find friends and, when you finally do, you just send a picture … that then disappears? The youth are obsessed it with 45% of users ages 18-24 so perhaps that’s also why I’ve stayed away – does anyone I know even use it?
